Pegah is a Persian born, Australian raised writer, director, executive producer, and entrepreneur. She is the co-founder of The Works Network and New Wave Films, and founder of production house PEGAH™. She now resides in Dubai, UAE.
Pegah’s oeuvre of work comes in many forms. From independent to commercial, fiction and non-fiction, she’s worked in Australia, UK, UAE, Germany, Serbia, Iran and Iraq. Her independent films have enjoyed official selections and wins at many festivals internationally including Cannes, Clermont Ferrand, Rotterdam, Slamdance and New York, as well as broadcast on channels such as BBC, CNN, FOX, and MBC. On the other side of the spectrum, her commercial work includes complete branding films and TVC’s for labels such as Panasonic, Fox, Yahlive and Conares amongst many others. With a very diverse background, Pegah’s work depicts an uninhibited and cross genre filmmaking talent, fusing the ever evolving industry technologies to push through her style with a distinct focus on story.
Graduating from the University of New South Wales in Sydney early 2004 and not knowing a soul in the film industry, Pegah’s fastest way in was appearing onscreen. Although she’d already built up a vast performing and acting background in Australia, she decided to join an “extra’s agency”. This gave her the opportunity for an almost uninterrupted (and paid!) learning experience. For the next 8 months, almost everyday, Pegah becomes a “fly on the wall” on big budget, highly professional, film and television productions in Australia.
Soon after Pegah was ready to make her first short film. Winning awards and making a lot of noise in Sydney, Pegah was immediately head hunted to work at Australia Film Base. Supporting and mentoring aspiring filmmakers on all aspects of making their first short film, and eager to learn more herself, Pegah also assistant directed, assistant produced and stepped into all other crew roles where required, for the professional productions of the company as well.
A year later, in 2006, Pegah decided upon a very different path. Inspired by the poetic yet raw filmmaking style of the Iranian directors, Pegah followed her passion to explore untold stories, so to express them in her own style for a wider audience. Thus she moved to Iran. Her already very active imagination went into a pleasant overdrive and Pegah made 4 short films there, as well as working with renowned directors on their feature films and television serials.
A year after that, in 2007 Pegah co-found the production company ‘New Wave Films' in Tehran, Iran. The prime focus of this company being social films that broke genre boundaries, the company also prioritized hiring as much female crew as possible, to further embed them within a very male driven industry. New Wave Films is still active today, creating su ccessful films, series and video content.
In 2009 Pegah’s film “Members if The Resistance” took her to many festivals around the world and finally brought her to the UAE as a special invite to The Middle East Film Festival held in Abu Dhabi. Witness to new and exciting opportunities, soon after Pegah settled in Dubai.
Since 2011 when Pegah co-found the media company The Works Network in Dubai, she’s also been its creative head leading Creation Works as well. Making all forms of commercial films and visual content for clients, Pegah conducts creative planning and marketing campaigns as well. Pegah is the Founding Director of My Film Works, the online cinema space for commercial and independent filmmakers operating under The Works Network umbrella. With a network of around 3000 content creators today, My Film Works is partnering with film festivals internationally to launch the first joint film festival in the UAE.
In 2016 Pegah was asked to work with BBC World on her passion project, a feature documentary she had independently begun based on the Kurdish Yazidi’s living in Iraq. Ecstatic, she co-produced and directed a shorter version of her film called I am Yazidi which was aired 84 times on BBC World in 2 languages. Pegah is now completing the feature documentary, her debut, which is an emotional journey delving further into the story of the Yazidi people, their glory, their plight, from outside and from within.
Having lived and worked in various countries has not only expanded, but also refined Pegah’s cinematic creation and expression. Ready to merge her talents, experiencesand pour everything into her medium, in 2018, Pegah became the sole founder of production company PEGAH™ (FZ LLE) in the UAE. Apart from the feature film debut, Pegah is also releasing 2 television series for National Geographic and Fox in 2019, as well as fast becoming a well known Jury member at global film festivals.
